History of Sto Tomas Municipal Police Stations

            Sto Tomas was created municipality on August 14, 1959 under Executive Order No. 352 issued by the late President Carlos P Garcia. At present, it has 96,496 population occupying a total of 19,894 households which were evenly distributed in 19 barangays municipal-wide with a total land area of 32,041 hectares. It is classified as a First Class Municipality currently under the stewardship of Dr. Maximo M. Estela, the Municipal Mayor.

It was through that Executive Order No. 352 that Sto Tomas Police Sub-Station was installed under the jurisdiction of Kapalong Police Department, Kapalong, Davao. During the incumbency of Hon. Mayor Anecito S Solis, the first elected Mayor in 1964, a separate Police Department was created under the municipality with an initial strength of nine (9) personnel under Jose Jacildo as the Chief of Police.

After about forty seven (47) years of existence, Sto Tomas Police Station is now located on a progressive and well develop municipality and it has now a total strength of thirty thee (33) warm blooded and able bodied police personnel presently under the leadership of Police Superintendent THOR VALIENTE P CUYOS, the Chief of Police. Not only did it grew proportionally but it has also achieved great accomplishments. For several years already, it has remained among the top three best police stations in the province. In 1997, this police station was voted as the MUNICIPAL POLICE STATION OF THE YEAR region wide. The award was given by Police Chief Superintendent JOSE C LALISAN, JR. who was then the Regional Director of PNP Region XI.

GEOGRAPHIC PROFILE

Sto Tomas is generally flat dotted 70% and 30% hilly. It is located in the Northeastern part of Davao Province. It is bounded in the North by the municipalities of Kapalong and Talaingod. In the Northeast by the municipality of Asuncion. In the south by the municipalities of Panabo and Carmen and in the Southwest by Davao City

ECONOMIC PROFILE

Significant to the economic development of Sto Tomas was the introduction of commercial banana plantation into the agricultural milieu in 1969 by an American company, the United Fruits. Later, large corporations like the Stanfilco, Marsman, Tadeco and Farming Town joined in the bandwagon and successfully established their business riches here and abroad. The pioneering markets penetrated by these corporations were Japan and Middle East. Today, notwithstanding the occasional misbehavior of the world markets on bananas, the industry still continue to play a major role in the economic development not only in the municipality but of the region, as well.

However, rice production remains one of the major player in the economic development of the municipality.
